Friction anisotropy at Ni„100...Õ„100... interfaces: Molecular dynamics studies

چکیده
The friction of surfaces moving relative to each other must derive from the atomic interaction at interfaces. However, recent experiments bring into question the fundamental understanding of this phenomenon. The analytic theories predict that most perfect clean incommensurate interfaces would produce no static friction, whereas commensurate aligned surfaces would have very high friction. In contrast recent experiments show that the static friction coefficient between clean but 45° misoriented Ni~001! surfaces is only a factor of 4 smaller than for the aligned surfaces (u;0°) and clearly does not vanish ~u is defined as the rotation angle between the relative crystallographic orientations of two parallel surfaces!. To understand this friction anisotropy and the difference between analytic theory and experiment, we carried out a series of nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations at 300 K for sliding of Ni~001!/Ni~001! interfaces under a constant shear force. Our molecular dynamics calculations on interfaces with the top layer roughed ~and rms roughness of 0.8 Å! lead to the static frictional coefficients in good agreement with the corresponding experimental data. On the other hand, perfect smooth surfaces ~rms roughness of 0 Å! lead to a factor of 34–330 decreasing of static friction coefficients for misaligned surfaces, a result more consistent with the analytic theories. This shows that the major source of the discrepancy is that small amounts of roughness dramatically increase the friction on incommensurate surfaces, so that misaligned directions are comparable to aligned directions.

Molecular dynamics (MD) studies on Friction Anisotropy at Ni(100)/(100) interface
The origin of friction comes from the atomic interaction at interfaces. Analytic theories indicated that there is no static friction on clean incommensurate interfaces, while a recent experiment revealed that the static friction coefficient was anisotropic with respect to the lattice orientation, but did not vanish on two clean Ni(100) mis-orientated surfaces. To understand this friction anisot...

The anisotropy exhibited by single-crystal silicon in nanometric cutting is very significant. In order to profoundly understand the effect of crystal anisotropy on cutting behaviors, a large-scale molecular dynamics model was conducted to simulate the nanometric cutting of single-crystal silicon in the (100)[0-10], (100)[0-1-1], (110)[-110], (110)[00-1], (111)[-101], and (111)[-12-1] crystal di...
متن کاملMolecular dynamics simulation of a binary mixture lubricant for use in hard disk interfaces
In Hard Disk Drives (HDD), it is necessary to decrease the Flying Height (FH) between the head and the disk (currently, FH is around 3-5 nm) so as to increase recording densities. Retaining the solid lubricant has become a difficult proposition owing to intermittent contact between the surfaces. ZTMD and Z are used as solid lubricant to lubricate these interfaces. In this paper, the behavior of...

With unique hierarchical fibrillar structures on their feet, gecko lizards can walk on vertical walls or even ceilings. Recent experiments have shown that strong binding along the shear direction and easy lifting in the normal direction can be achieved by forming unidirectional carbon nanotube array with laterally distributed tips similar to gecko's feet. In this study, a multiscale modeling ap...
